     CCR TASK 2 

Typical horror movie spectators are normally people from the age 15 to 25, because they want to try new things and experiment with different emotions and feelings. 44 males to 1 females watch thrillers, so it is very clear that more males like scary movies than females. the Lodger is targeted to middle class spectators from this age group showing an ,,ordinary,, family sitting in the kitchen which is easy to relate to by the target audience.

The setting of the scene is a ,,normal,, family sitting in the kitchen . Most of the audience is a probably able do connect with the opening sequence because it is a daily situation for some to sit in the kitchen with their family, but the creepy things with the chopped-off arm and hand in the fridge is anything but normal. 
Otherwise it is a seemingly normal family setting mum preparing dinner and the kids and father entertaining themselves - at first sight almost boring.

The first shot of the opening sequence is a wide shot of the house where it seems that nothing happens - creating some tension as spectators await for some surprising shocking scene.
There is a close up shot of the kids playing  the operation game, which shows that there might be even more wrong with the family.

We added some non diegetic sounds like always when she opens the fridge some tension building music is playing and also when the parents look at each other when the woman prepares the meat there is also a tension building music. But in general the sequence is built on diegetic sound.

One of the first shots is a close up of the woman cutting carrots. The static focus of the camera on the knife cutting is supposed to make it even more scary - the audience should crave for what will she do with the knife other than cutting carrots. 

The zoom to the man's face looking to his wife shows in his face that there is something wrong. Slowly the scene moves forward to the freezer which the woman opening it. Here it is: A human arm and hand in the freeze still with some blood on it. What are they gonna do with it? It is kept open. We can hear a car parking and the police radio which is non diegetic because we added it in the editing. 

The story would continue with a retrospective while police investigation and interrogation of the couple would reveal more shocking details.... surprises to come.

The whole setting is quite similar to movies of Alfred Hitchcock (the grand master of horror movies) a dominant and strong woman and mother is shown as the main character and a potentially week male anti-hero.

Audience feedback: 
First impression: "Engaging curiosity what to expect as it is a very normal start. But from the point I am able to see the hand in the fridge it shocked me and also disgusted me - like on a rollercoaster when it goes down." To be fair in the sequence isn't a lot happening and it is not a dynamic change of scenes but rather a slow and steady flow. Todays younger generation due to modern media and gaming is used to rapidly changing scenes. Thats why the actual target audience for the thrillers could be bored because the opening sequence is too static, on the other hand it is the slowness of the sequence maby exactly what is keeping attention of the viewers who are other wise used to rapidly changing scenes nowadays mostly in use.
